Little Luxuries

May 15th, 2009

Many of us are scaling down and watching our money a little bit closer, but there are still lots of great little luxuries in each of our lives. What are your little luxuries? What kind of things do you have or like to do that make you feel decadent and extra special? I bet if you really reflect on it, there are numerous little rituals or consumables that make your life extra enjoyable and fun.

David and I have a coffee pot that we automatically set each night before we go to bed. By the time the alarm goes off in the morning, the coffee has already started to brew. Since he preps everything the night before, my job is to prepare the morning coffee. (Lucky David gets his coffee served in bed!). I love waking up to fresh brewed coffee and preparing it with some type of fun flavored creamer like cinnamon vanilla. Some mornings, I go really wild and add a tablespoon (or two) of fat free generic cool whip on top. Then it’s off to the computer to read my favorite newspapers on line-The LA Times, The NY Times, and The San Francisco Chronicle. Then I hit the alternative sites where I get my real news. Morning coffee while reading the news is a little luxury I always look forward to. I have a few uninterrupted moments of relaxation and renewal before the rushed chaos begins as I strive to get dressed, out of the house, and on the way to work.

And then there’s my work related indulgence. I bring my lunch to work most days, but every few weeks, four of my work girlfriends and I treat our selves to lunch down the street at the gourmet café. Although not real cheap, but still reasonably priced, I enjoy a shrimp Caesar salad and ice water with lemon while sitting on an open air porch taking in the great Southern CA weather. We gossip and laugh about work and just have a good ole time. I love those girls and will miss them dreadfully after my end date.

There are so many little luxuries in my life that create warm happy memories. Although good coffee and good food definitely stand on their merits, it’s really what you experience or the people you spend time with that make these experiences so rich and meaningful. Sometimes we may think we want to spend beau coups of money, but what we really want is to fill our hearts with meaning and joy. No one likes feeling deprived and there is no reason to when there are countless little things we can do or enjoy each day that give us the same satisfaction as an expensive restaurant meal or buying a new pair of shoes. I plan to explore more and more little luxuries each day and I can’t wait to see what I discover tomorrow.
